Film London
Film London is the strategic agency for film and media in the UK’s capital, working to sustain, promote and develop London as a major international film-making and film cultural capital. Film London commissions and funds both creative and industrial initiatives, including skills training and business development Schemes, and works to develop the city as a world-class film location.

Film London is funded by the UK Film Council and the London Development Agency through Creative London.

Microwave Training Programme
With financial support from Skillset and the London Development Agency, Film London is piloting a 12-month training programme to support its innovative Micro-budget Feature Production Scheme ‘Microwave’. The Microwave Training Programme is designed to support the selection process for the Microwave Production Scheme and to provide further bespoke training support for the film-making teams selected to go forward into production. In addition the programme will provide a platform and forum to showcase completed films and disseminate learning materials through regional roadshows and online.

The full Microwave training Programme will consist of several components (detailed in the attached schedule) that will take place throughout the year. They are:

o Micro-school – 5 days of development seminars and workshops for up to 10 short-listed film-making teams
o Bespoke training – for up to 3 greenlit film-making teams
o Mentor Inspiration Networking Events – for all Microschool participants
o Mentoring through production for up to 3 greenlit film-making teams
o Regional panel seminars and showcasing of completed films

Film London is looking to offer a fixed fee freelance contract for a Training Co-ordinator, who will be responsible for the co-ordination and delivery of aspects of this pilot programme.

The Training Co-ordinator will report to the Skills Project Co-ordinator in the Film London Skills and Development Department, working closely with the Film London Production Department.

Microwave Training Co-ordinator:

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Coordinating the MicrowaveTraining Programme to include

o Coordinating and delivering the Microschool as and when necessary (including venue hire; timetabling; technical provision; catering; collation and delivery of course materials (Microschool Guidebook); evaluation and monitoring
o Identifying, booking, and briefing external tutors, mentors, and associated staff (i.e. actors, Script editors etc)
o Identifying and coordinating Mentors and providing Mentoring Guidelines in agreement with Film London officers
o Coordinating and delivery of Mentor Inspiration events (2) in consultation with Film London officers
o Sourcing and securing training locations as and when required
o Facilitating regional seminars and showcases in collaboration with Film London officers including securing and booking regional venues briefing speakers and arranging travel and accommodation where necessary
o Producing Evaluation reports on each stage of the Training Programme to inform the development of subsequent Training.
o Budget monitoring and reporting to Film London officers

ESSENTIAL EXPERIENCE AND PERSONAL QUALITIES

This assignment has a varied part-time work schedule covering approximately 9 months. It would ideally suit an individual able to commit between ½ and 2 days per week (depending on work schedule) and will ideally begin from January 2006. As part of their submission, applicants are asked to demonstrate the following skills and experience:

Essential:

Project Management & Technical skills
o Proven project management experience (essentially 2-5 years), demonstrating a methodical and accurate approach.
o Knowledge and informed understanding of training needs for micro- budget film production.
o Training delivery experience including Training co-ordination or equivalent
o Knowledge and understanding of Mentoring and Mentoring processes
o Budget maintenance and monitoring.
o Proven report and narrative writing skills.
o Proven ICT skills – word processing, spreadsheets, email

Interpersonal Skills
o Self starter, able to work under own motivation and with minimum supervision and prioritise and manage own workload
o Good communication skills – written and oral

Industry Knowledge
o Interest and knowledge of the film industry
o Knowledge or experience of skills and development needs for film-makers in the film and moving image sector.

Desirable:
o Knowledge and understanding of the needs of online training provision
o Personable and flexible
o Coaching/mentoring skills.

CONTRACT ARRANGEMENTS:

• Duration: appointment to begin as soon as possible – up to 9 months
• Contract for Services with: Film London
• Reporting to: Kevin Dolan (Skills Project Co-ordinator Film London)
• Services provided: The Project Manager is expected to be self-supporting in respect of communications and IT. Occasional hot-desking at Film London, if required, can be provided.

January - March 2007 Mentor Inspiration Events (two events for up to 30 participants) networking and seminar – central London (champions of the Microwave Production Scheme in conversation and q and a with participants to discuss aspects of microbudget production).

January – March 2007 Mentoring guidelines developed; Mentors identified and briefed (working with Teams during production and after)
A pool of industry experts will be available as mentors throughout the production process. As and when issues arise the relevant expert will be asked to assist. This may take the form of telephone advice or a face-to-face meeting, whichever is appropriate

March – May 2007 Review and revision of Microschool Programme; Microschool Preparations; identifying speakers; venues etc; briefing speakers finalizing programme

June 2007 Microschool Programme An intensive 3-day training and development programme for up to 30 film-makers)
consisting of seminars, workshops and case studies covering budgeting scheduling; marketing; pitching; locations; script and director workshops.

July – August Development of regional Roadshows - A tour to 5 locations across England that will include: Trailers of the completed micro-budget features to show the results of the programme and what can be achieved. Seminars on the commercial opportunities available as well as the practical and commercial realities of developing micro-budget feature films. The seminars would use the materials developed in the Micro-school together with the experience of the participants and case studies.

September 2007 - Regional Roadshows presented

October 2007 - Microwave Training Programme ends
