FESTIVAL SUCCESS FOR NEW BIRMINGHAM FILMMAKING TALENT

With Birmingham and the West Midlands’ hottest new filmmakers having only just completed their boundary-pushing short films for Screen WM and the UK Film Council, we were delighted to hear that two of the films have already been selected to screen in competition in two of the UK’s most prestigious festivals.

Hot on the heels of the Cannes International Film Festival, where all 7 of the Digital Shorts films screened throughout the festival in the Short Film Corner, we’ve just learnt that UK big-hitters Britdoc and Rushes Soho Shorts Festival have programmed The Apology Line and The Animal Book respectively. Both festivals take place over the summer.

The Apology Line, a groundbreaking short documentary project which centred around the creation of a freephone telephone number which members of the public could call at any time and anonymously apologise for anything at all, is already making waves in the industry and garnering Moseley-based director James Lees much attention.

Britdoc is a new documentary-focused industry-led festival and is principally sponsored by Channel 4’s documentary-orientated More 4 channel.

The Animal Book is a beautiful animated fairytale set in a mechanical world entirely devoid of animal life, until the arrival of the mysterious ‘animal book’. The stop-motion animation, in a style akin to Tim Burton’s masterpiece The Nightmare Before Christmas, was co-directed by Natalie Hinchley and Chris Randall, and production took place entirely in Chris’ brand new studio in Digbeth.

The Rushes Soho Shorts Festival takes place in London every year and is considered one of the UK’s premiere shorts festivals. The Animal Book will compete for the festival’s Best Animation Award.

Dan Lawson, Executive Producer for Screen WM on all of the Digital Shorts films, is delighted with this latest news. “We have great belief that the West Midlands has a wealth of exciting filmmaking talent on offer, and this festival success will hopefully be the start of many like it for all of our films. It’s great to see all the hard work put in by the filmmakers paying off so soon after the films were completed.”
