DO YOU HAVE THE SKILLS TO CUT IT IN THE WORLD OF DOCUMENTARIES?

Do you have the skills to cut it in the world of documentaries? With multi-skilling filmmakers increasingly in demand, it’s important to make sure that you don’t get left behind. Fortunately, places are still remaining on four fantastic courses offered in DFG’s Multi-Skilling Month extravaganza.

Research for Factual (24th September)

Research is everything when it comes to making docs, whether you’re looking to make your own film or break into the industry. Hone your research skills, and get to grips with archive footage, legal issues, the approaches required for different doc genres, how to deal with the different professionals you’ll encounter in your work and lots more.

HDV Camera Techniques (1st- 2nd October)

Taught by award-winning Director of Photography and Camerawoman, Belinda Parsons, this intensive two-day workshop will help you to master the industry-standard Sony Z1. Through a series of practical exercises, you will learn how to identify the potential, and make the most of your documentary subject matter and location, and create a customised ‘look’ for your film using your camera and a variety of aides.

Sound Workshop (3rd October)

Treat sound like the poor sister to getting that shot and your documentary will suffer. This hands-on workshop will examine the challenges commonly faced by lone filmmakers and sound recordists and the best way to tackle them. Through a series of practical exercises, you will learn how to listen accurately and use different sound recording equipment to get the best results. You will also deal with issues of background sounds and other factors which affect sound recording; creating and collecting sound effects; location recording techniques; and sound and post production, amongst others.

Lighting Techniques (4 - 5 October 2007)

The way you work with light can fundamentally impact on the look, power and effect of your documentary. Through a series of practical exercises, you will get to grips with lighting documentaries and learn how to make the most of your film.

The Documentary Filmmakers Group is the leading provider of industry-focussed training in documentaries, and the national organisation working to promote talent and innovation in documentary filmmaking.
