'DESIGN FOR THE CAMERA' COURSE AT THE NATIONAL FILM & TELEVISION SCHOOL
Subsidised by Skillset’s Film Skills Fund
Monday 10th – Friday 14th March 2008
Designers and Art Directors that are not fully trained in the principles and technicalities of working in film and television may be able to create something that looks wonderful on paper, but on the screen the ‘look’ will be totally different and nothing like the original intention. When designing for film and television, it’s what the camera ‘sees’ and how that looks which is of vital importance.
This course is principally for art department personnel who must know how their designs will work on screen so they are able to explore and experiment with colours, textures, light and shade in collaboration with the camera.
Over five intensive days, the mysteries and mythologies of the camera will be revealed in a non-complicated fashion and manner. [This is a chance to ask all those questions you’ve always been too embarrassed to ask on set!]
In brief, the course will cover:
• Basic camera principles – 35mm; S16mm, Digibeta and Hi-Def
• Lenses – what they see, how to calculate and draw its angle of vision (absolutely essential when designing any set for shooting in the studio or on location)
• Aspect ratios
• Basic lighting principles
• Using different lamps in the same scene to change and create alternative moods and textured colours
There are two experienced course tutors for this course – a film production designer and a director of photography. They will, through a series of practical exercises explain the intricacies and complexities of production design and its relationship with film and video cameras.
COME PREPARED TO WORK HARD, LEARN A LOT AND ENJOY YOURSELF IN THE PROCESS!
