BRUM' S KICKSTART FOR THE CLASSIC BRITISH HEIST MOVIE?
Heist movies are a long-established, much-loved and successful part of British Cinema. Now, within less than a year of being published, Brummie Ron Dawson's first novel, The Last Viking, which tells the story the world's greatest heist, is all set to kick start the genre once more.
Following the long and distinquished tradition of great British gangster and heist movies such as the Italian Job, The League of Gentlemen, The Krays, The Long Good Friday and a dozen more, The Last Viking has the unique settings of Birmingham and Guernsey in the 1950's, and a mob of both loveable, vicious and determined characters inhabiting a plot of ingenious twists and surprises.
Within weeks of the book being released readers were saying that the action-packed, violent and fast -moving yarn should be made into a film. It was no surprise then when Tom Norton, the man behind the Screen West Midland's Film Producers' Forum, invited Ron to pitch his novel, which is called 'The Last Viking', to a meeting of the Forum in February. Birmingham based producer and director, Michael Ford, immediately recognised the book's potential as a film and contacted Ron to negotiate a one year film option contract.
The contract was signed exactly one year from the book's official publication date in 2006. Simon Bovey, a Midlands script writer and director is to develop the script. The signing also coincides with the release of the book's second edition which includes more information and photographs of the locations and equipment used by the gang. No-one is quite sure, however, if the yarn is fact or fiction and author Ron Dawson is not saying just in case anything he says may be used in evidence agains't him!
