BRITDOC MAIN FUND OPENING ON 8TH AUGUST
Thanks to Channel 4's generous support, Britdocs currently have a Main Fund of over £500,000 to give away each year in grants to support independent filmmakers and artists making documentary projects that would not be commissioned by a UK broadcaster. In our first year, we funded over 20 projects and so far in 2006/2007 have funded an additional 7.
Before applying, please bear in mind what we are looking to fund. Though we are sponsored by Channel 4, we do not commission programmes for them. We give grants to independent filmmakers and artists to make one-off documentary projects that would not find funding from a UK broadcaster. We do not top up television budgets, but rather look to widen the spectrum of documentaries being made in this country by giving filmmakers the opportunity to complete passion projects that might not otherwise get made. Take a minute to look at the projects we funded in our first year; they range from quirky shorts to hard-hitting feature-length documentaries and will give you an idea of the wide range of films we are interested in.
The Foundation awards bursaries between £2,000 and £100,000 and the budgets our filmmakers work to are very pared down. More often than not (though this varies from project to project) this means you will be expected to put your time in for free.
Grants are available for:
- Short Documentaries
- 3 Minute Wonder
- Feature Length Films
- Developments
