Birds Eye View, the first UK film festival devoted exclusively to the work of women, will be presenting their first documentary-focused festival in September.

“Groundbreaking genius. I love it.” - Sally Phillips (Smack the Pony, Green Wing)

Birds Eye View launched the 1st major women’s film festival in 2005 - a positive and creative response to the fact that, whilst film is the most powerful medium in the world, only 7% directors are women. Birds Eye View, which is emerging as one of London’s must-see film festivals, is dedicated to fostering and promoting women filmmakers worldwide, providing a much-needed platform for cutting edge female talent.

This year we’ve done it again, but in 3 parts, culminating in a programme of inspirational international documentaries.

During September Birds Eye View will screen 13 documentaries over 3 days in London’s premiere contemporary arts venue (the Institute of Contemporary Art), as part of the Birds Eye View Film Festival Part III: Documentaries. The programme will showcase award winning talent from around the world, and traverse subjects including taxidermy, octogenarian cabaret dancers, the environmental impact of Death Valley and the emotional impact of Hurricane Katrina, as well as the highlight and closing night documentary, Until The Violence Stops, a film exploring the grassroots movement which has erupted in response to Eva Ensler’s the Vagina Monologues.

Birds Eye View, which is supported by luminaries such as Joanna Lumley, Jerry Hall, Juliet Stevenson and Alison Steadman as well as acclaimed directors Mike Figgis and Anthony Minghella, will compliment the film programme with a special panel event I Did It My Way, featuring female documentary makers, plus industry movers and shakers (including BAFTA AND Emmy winning Saira Shah and shooting people co-founder Jess Search), who will discuss how they started out and made their docs, with lots of tips and inspiration.

“World cinema from the hearts and minds of women. Cutting edge, urgent, now.”
Bonnie Greer (Playwright and Critic)
